Baptism is an ordinance reserved for those who have put their faith in Jesus Christ. “So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.” (Acts 2:41) Just as a wedding ring doesn't make a person married--it is a symbol of ones commitment--baptism doesn't make a person a Christian; it is simply a public expression of your faith in Jesus.
